Hildred Gruszczynski passed away at 90 years, surrounded by family on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Bethany Village in Honesdale, PA. Born on the island of Saba, Netherland Antilles, in July 1933, the daughter of John and Elfrida Johnson, she immigrated to the United States when she was 21 years old and became a naturalized citizen. She lived in Richmond Hill, NY for 65 years and her remaining years in Honesdale, PA.

Hildred was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joseph Gruszczynski. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Michael and Jaleh Gruszczynski, Alan Gruszczynski, Carol Kneier, and Diane and Robert Menke, also her son-in-law Frank Tufano, 11 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter Debra Tufano and son-in-law Peter Kneier.

Hildred worked many jobs over the years but found her joy in banking as a customer representative, retiring in 1999. Working for Northside Savings (formally Richmond Hill Savings Bank), she always had the longest customer lines because everyone wanted to have Hildred help them or just say hello.

Hildred's true love was spending time with family. Along with her husband Joe, they would love to travel and visit her children, grandchildren and other family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and baking and just talking with people. Her faith was very important to her and attended mass regularly.

The family is very grateful to the staff at Bethany Village for providing a caring and loving home and Wayne Memorial Hospice for providing care and support in the later years of her life.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday (10/27/2023) 10:30 am, at St. Benedict Joseph Labre in Richmond Hill, NY. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery in Riverhead, NY. Friends may visit Leahy McDonald Funeral Home, 11102 Atlantic Ave, South Richmond Hill, NY 11419 on Thursday (10/26/2023) from 4 – 8 PM.
